Executive Director, Dr.
Ramon Nieves, Attends the First International Children's
Conference in Costa Rica
In July 2009, over 300 professional educators
and
administrators gathered in San Jose, Costa Rica at the First
International Early Childhood Congress at the University of
Costa Rica. The purpose of this conference was to present
various models that have been successful in early childhood
practices.
Tuesday’s Child was invited to present its
model that embodies the vision to serve both English and
Spanish speaking populations in Chicago.
Dr.
Ramon Nieves, Executive Director of Tuesday’s Child
presented two workshops, in both languages, to conference
participants. The workshops focused on the need to advance
the work of working with children with special needs. There
was an overwhelming response by the conference attendees for
the CARE Model, as well as great interest in “Familias
Felices” model, as they were viewed as outstanding models
for early childhood intervention and effective parenting
methods.
In
addition to the workshops, the International Early Childhood
Conference presenters met with the Costa Rican Minister of
Education in an effort to begin collaborative efforts for
curriculum development, parenting programs, and more
interchanges between cooperating countries. It is the
Congress’s hope to assist other developing early childhood
programs and organizations on a global scale and to continue
to share effective and successful early childhood models.
Dr. Brazleton and Dr. Joshua D. Sparrow from
Harvard University Medical School shared their research and
experience in early childhood with the conference
attendees. Dr. Brazleton has spent over fifty years in
developing the Touchpoint Model in early childhood. He is
renowned world-wide for his research with infants. Dr.
Nieves had the opportunity to share their experiences in the
field of early childhood. Dr. Brazleton’s long-time
colleague and friend, Dr. Sparrow, also from Harvard
University, joined the discussion. We look forward to
building, on a global scale, a consciousness and awareness
for the need for effective early childhood intervention
models. Dr. Nieves is scheduled to return to Costa Rica in
December to continue discussions with colleagues and
government officials, in developing a model for early
childhood for the country.

Dr. Ramon
Nieves with Dr. T.B. Brazelton, from Touchpoint, and
Dr.
Joshua Sparrow, from the Harvard Medical School
